If you’re looking to heal and want to understand your options outside of the conventional medical system, this is the book you need.

Healing Outside the System is a combination memoir, guide, and informational resource for people navigating illness who feel frustrated, unsupported, or stuck, and who want to know what they can do next, how to advocate for themselves, and chart their own healing journey, rather than waiting and relying on someone else to do it for them.

In 2011, Alison Ruks was diagnosed with a severe form of multiple sclerosis and told she would likely be in a wheelchair within five years. Rather than accepting that outcome, she began a successful journey of healing outside the conventional medical system — one that focused on healing the body first, then the mind, and finally the spirit, leading to whole-body healing that defied her prognosis.

This book tells that story honestly and in detail.

Alongside her personal experience, and inspiration drawn from other self-healing advocates such as Kris Carr, Terry Wahls, and Amy Myers, Alison brings together her education and lived experience in an easy-to-follow format. The book walks readers through the many healing and testing modalities, tools, and perspectives she explored along the way, some familiar, some unconventional, and some controversial, all approached with care and critical thinking.

For each topic, the book clearly outlines:

  • what it is

  • what Alison did

  • why it works

  • and what you can do

The goal is not to provide a rigid protocol or tell you what to believe, but to help you understand your options, take informed action, and participate actively in your own healing.

This is an easy-to-read, practical book designed to support real people in real life, and one readers can return to again and again throughout their healing journey.

Each section includes:

  • clear overviews

  • informative summaries

  • useful checklists

  • helpful resources

  • reflection questions

  • planning and journaling prompts

With this format, readers can move at their own pace and apply what resonates.

Healing Outside the System is for people who want realistic hope, not false promises, but the understanding that healing is possible, even when it doesn’t follow the path they were given.

It is also written for family members and friends supporting loved ones through illness, offering insight into what the journey can look like and how to walk alongside someone with compassion and understanding.

This book does not offer medical advice or guarantee outcomes. It offers perspective, education, empowerment, and hope.

Above all, it offers the truth that you are not alone. And healing is possible.

About The Author, Alison Ruks

Former corporate executive turned wellness advocate and author, Alison Ruks, is the founder of True North Wellness, a space created to support deep healing through intuitive care, grounded tools, and the integration of mind, body, and spirit.

Years after a life-altering "incurable" diagnosis with a predicted future of severe disability by 2016, Alison chose a different path.

Rather than accepting a fear-based prognosis, she followed her intuition, turning away from the conventional system and toward a more soul-led, nature-rooted approach to healing. What followed was a profound personal transformation and a full reclamation of her wellness.

She now combines her background in business and people and culture with over a decade of experience in natural health. Alison is a Chartered Herbalist, Reiki Master, intuitive wellness guide, and certified yoga instructor (studying under Laura Martini of Kelowna, BC). She currently serves as Executive Director of Connect Counselling & Therapy in Kelowna, BC, while providing education and soul-centered offerings through True North Wellness at her home in Lake Country, BC.

Her first book, What Do I Do Now?, is a free resource designed to support those standing at the edge of change. Her upcoming release, Healing Outside the System, shares the full story of how she was failed by the system, and how she reclaimed her wellness through deep listening, spiritual healing, and the integration of energy work, natural medicine, and radical self-trust.

Alison lives in the beautiful Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada, and is the proud mother of her greatest joy, her daughter. Outside of her work, she spends as much time as possible among trees and animals, grounding through nature, yoga, and meditation. Her deepest passion is sharing knowledge, courage, and healing with those who need it most, especially those who’ve been made to feel unheard, unseen, or uncertain on their path.
