About Alison

Former corporate executive turned wellness advocate and author, Alison Ruks, is the founder of True North Wellness, a space created to support deep healing through intuitive care, grounded tools, and the integration of mind, body, and spirit.

Years after a life-altering "incurable" diagnosis with a predicted future of severe disability by 2016, Alison chose a different path.

Rather than accepting a fear-based prognosis, she followed her intuition, turning away from the conventional system and toward a more soul-led, nature-rooted approach to healing. What followed was a profound personal transformation and a full reclamation of her wellness.

She now combines her background in business and people and culture with over a decade of experience in natural health. Alison is a Chartered Herbalist, Reiki Master, intuitive wellness guide, and certified yoga instructor (studying under Laura Martini of Kelowna, BC). She currently serves as Executive Director of Connect Counselling & Therapy in Kelowna, BC, while providing education and soul-centered offerings through True North Wellness at her home in Lake Country, BC.

Her first book, What Do I Do Now?, is a free resource designed to support those standing at the edge of change. Her upcoming release, Healing Outside the System, shares the full story of how she was failed by the system, and how she reclaimed her wellness through deep listening, spiritual healing, and the integration of energy work, natural medicine, and radical self-trust.

Alison lives in the beautiful Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada, and is the proud mother of her greatest joy, her daughter. Outside of her work, she spends as much time as possible among trees and animals, grounding through nature, yoga, and meditation. Her deepest passion is sharing knowledge, courage, and healing with those who need it most, especially those who’ve been made to feel unheard, unseen, or uncertain on their path.

Our Books & Resources

At the heart of True North Wellness is the story that started it all, Alison Ruks’ journey of healing outside the conventional system after a devastating, “incurable” diagnosis.

Choosing to walk away from fear-based medicine, she found her way back to wholeness through healing the integration of the mind, body and spirit. From that healing came a desire to share what truly helped her heal, and to offer others an additional path forward.

True North Wellness began with her writings:

First Steps to Healing. A free, hopeful, and approachable guide to help you begin your healing journey. [Click here for more info]

What Do I Do Now? A practical guide for navigating the first steps after a diagnosis or life-altering moment. [Click here for more info]

Healing Outside the System. Alison’s upcoming book about exactly how she reclaimed her health through trust, truth, and the integration of mind, body, and spirit. [Click here for more info]

She wrote these pieces to offer hope, especially for those who don’t resonate with a one-size-fits-all model of care. They are for those ready to remember that healing can happen outside the box and outside the system. Alison is also curating a collection of her most trusted books, supplements, and wellness products, the very tools that supported her along the way.

Our History

True North Wellness Co. has evolved from beautiful beginnings.

What started as True North Slings, a small company handcrafting linen ring slings for babywearing, has grown, shifted, and come full circle.

In an unexpected way, the journey with True North led Alison back to her roots in natural health and wellness.

At its core and still today, True North has always been about caring for and holding space: for families, for growth, and for transformation.

This timeline shares the heartbeats of our journey: the pivots, the pauses, and the powerful returns to purpose that shaped who we are today.

2016

True North Slings Was born.

It all began with a desire for a quality, linen sling.

True North Wellness was first born as True North Slings, founded by two amazing folks, Anali and Dmitri in Alberta, and started as a small Canadian company making handcrafted, linen babywearing products that wrapped love, safety, and connection around families across Canada and the U.S. What started at the kitchen table grew into something bigger: a way to hold others, while holding ourselves, through life’s most tender seasons.

2022

A new chapter begins.

Alison Ruks, a mother, maker, and wellness advocate, became the new heart behind True North in the thick of the COVID pandemic. With a deep respect for its roots and a vision for soulful expansion, she purchased the company with the intention of continuing to nurture others.

2023

Home becomes a haven.

As the pandemic started to wind down and as the world slowly came back into itself, True North Slings expanded into True North Home & Family, making thoughtfully crafted home goods, including linen curtains, heirloom-quality duvet covers, and other textile items that offered comfort not just to the body, but to the spirit.

2024

A quiet reckoning.

Just as momentum was growing for True North Home & Family, an unexpected economic shift arrived, the kind that invites deep pause and reflection. After navigating years of uncertainty through the pandemic, Alison felt called to stop. To breathe. To listen more closely to what was next.

In that space, an ending and a beginning emerged. True North wasn’t going to be just about home and family anymore. There was a call for something different.

2025

True North Wellness is born.

From the roots of her own healing journey, after being told her disease was incurable, Alison reimagined the brand as True North Wellness.

Guided by lived experience and the deep knowing that the world is in need of healing, True North now exists as a space for mind, body, and spirit restoration with books and resources, services, and soul-centred products to support every step of the journey.
